Souwest Magnetech Alnico Magnets Supplier

Permanent magnet Alnico is an iron alloy with the addition of aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and a few other components that enhance magnetism in addition to iron. Alnico alloys have high coactivity and high Curie temperature. Alnico alloys are hard and brittle and cannot be cold worked, so they must be made by casting or sintering.

Alnico magnets are used in electric motors, electric guitar pickups, microphones, sensors, speakers, traveling wave tubes, cow magnets, etc. If you would like to customize alnico magnets or learn more about permanent magnetic materials, please do not hesitate to contact Souwest Magnetech alnico magnets supplier.

Introduction to Alnico Magnets

Alnico magnets (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt alloys) are renowned for their exceptional temperature stability and corrosion resistance, making them ideal for demanding applications like electric motors, sensors, and guitar pickups. Our Alnico 2 magnets provide a balanced magnetic strength with high durability, while we also offer grades like Alnico 3, 5, and 8 to meet specific performance requirements.

How Are Souwest Magnetech AINico Magnets Made?

According to different production processes, there are Sintered AlNiCo and Cast AlNiCo. Most of the products are round and square in shape. The casting process can be processed and produced into different sizes and shapes; compared with the casting process, the sintered products are limited to small sizes, and the dimensional tolerances of the produced blanks are better than those of the cast products, and the magnetic properties are slightly lower than those of the cast products, but the processability is better. Among the permanent magnet materials, cast Alnico permanent magnets to have the lowest reversible temperature coefficient and can work at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius or more. Alnico permanent magnets are widely used in various instrumentation and other applications.

Features of Souwest Magnetech AlNiCo Magnets

The advantages of Alnico magnets are high reminisce (up to 1.35T) and low-temperature coefficient. At a temperature coefficient of -0.02%/°C, the maximum operating temperature can be around 520°C. The disadvantages are very low coactivity (usually less than 160kA/m) and a non-linear demagnetization curve. Therefore, although Alnico magnets are easily magnetized, they are also easily demagnetized.

Alnico Magnets for High-Temperature Applications

Alnico magnets excel in high-temperature environments due to their exceptional temperature stability, retaining up to 80% of magnetization at 500°C. This makes them ideal for electric motors and sensors operating in extreme conditions. Among Alnico grades, Alnico 5 magnets and Alnico 8 magnets are specifically engineered for thermal resilience. Alnico 5 offers balanced magnetic coercivity and remanence, suitable for industrial motors, while Alnico 8 prioritizes higher coercivity (up to 1,900 Oe) to resist demagnetization in aerospace or automotive sensors. Unlike Neodymium magnets, Alnico alloys require no surface coatings due to inherent corrosion resistance. However, their lower energy product limits miniaturization. For applications like turbine sensors or furnace controls, Alnico bar magnets with tailored geometries ensure stable flux paths under thermal stress, outperforming ferrite or rare-earth alternatives in durability.

Alnico vs. Neodymium Magnets Comparison

Alnico and Neodymium magnets serve distinct roles. Alnico grades (e.g., Alnico 3, 5, 8) excel in temperature stability (>500°C) and corrosion resistance, ideal for sensors in harsh environments or guitar pickups requiring nuanced signal fidelity. Their lower magnetic coercivity (~0.6–1.9 kOe) allows easy re-magnetization but risks partial demagnetization under shock. Neodymium magnets, conversely, boast superior energy product (up to 52 MGOe) for compact electric motors but suffer rapid performance loss above 150°C. While Alnico bar magnets dominate linear motor designs, Neodymium’s brittleness and need for coatings (e.g., Ni-Cu-Ni) limit use in humid conditions. Cost-wise, Alnico is preferred for legacy systems, whereas Neodymium suits miniaturized tech. Hybrid solutions, like Alnico 8 for high-temperature rotor cores paired with Neodymium stators, optimize efficiency in aerospace actuators.

Custom-Sized Alnico 2 Magnets

Alnico 2 magnets are prized in niche applications like vintage guitar pickups and analog sensors due to their "softer" magnetic profile (lower coercivity ~560 Oe) and warm tonal characteristics. Custom-sizing Alnico 2 allows precision matching to legacy equipment or retro audio designs. Unlike Alnico 3 magnets (lower coercivity) or Alnico 5 magnets (higher energy), Alnico 2 strikes a balance between moderate temperature stability and ease of magnetization. Manufacturers often shape them into Alnico bar magnets for linear flux distribution in magnetic chucks or compasses. However, their limited thermal tolerance (~250°C) restricts use in high-power electric motors. Customization involves annealing treatments to refine grain alignment, enhancing corrosion resistance without coatings. For guitar pickups, irregular geometries (e.g., rod or U-shapes) are crafted to optimize string sensitivity, demonstrating how tailored Alnico 2 solves vintage-to-modern compatibility challenges.
